Welcome to our Social Media Series! We will be sharing tips and tricks over the next few weeks to help you make the most of your social media channels for your business. This week, we’re talking about making the most of your Facebook page. Facebook is the most used social media platform, boasting nearly 2.45 billion active monthly users. Over 1.5 billion of those users visit every day. If you’re looking for the best way to keep your target audience interested, these tips and tricks can help in getting you on the right track.
Do: Promote your Facebook page.
Encourage people to “like” your page to get the latest and greatest from your organization. Put a Facebook icon on your promotional materials (business cards, brochures, letterhead, your website, etc) if you haven’t already so your audience knows they can follow you on Facebook.
Do: Keep your status updates brief.
If you have a longer post, announcement, or statement to make, sometimes it’s best to create a post on your website and share the link on your Facebook page. Long Facebook posts often get lost in the midst of more appealing posts, so sharing the link to a website post, an eye-catching photo, and a short caption will not only grab more of your audience, but also draw people to visit your website.
Do: Be responsive.
If people ask questions in the comment sections of your posts or send you Facebook messages, be sure to respond promptly. This can be tricky, especially if you don’t monitor your Facebook page frequently. However, a quick response to a question leaves a lasting impression on a potential customer or client.
Do: Vary your posts.
Curate your content and offer your followers an assortment of your own posts, information shared from other sources (interesting business articles, inspirational quotes, etc. all linked back to your organization), images, and questions to spark discussion (what are your summer plans? etc.) While it is important to stay on-brand, you also want to make sure your audience has a variety of interesting content to keep them coming back.
If you only take one piece of advice from this blog post, let it be this one. Proofreading your posts takes just a few seconds, and can make a world of a difference. Some typos are easy to overlook, but you want to make extra sure that your posts are neat and professional before posting. If you do happen to make a mistake, you can always go back and edit your original post.
Don’t: Share private information.
This one probably goes without saying, but you really never know. Be careful not to post or share anything private or confidential on your feed or Facebook Messenger. If a customer or client is requesting information via Facebook Messenger that shouldn’t get out to the public, be sure to request their email or ask to meet with them in person.
Don’t: Forget about your Facebook page.
Managing your Facebook page and keeping it up to date might not be high on your list of priorities, but it should be. Active pages show up more frequently on users’ timelines, so you’ll want to be sure to post frequently, at least once every week or so, but no more than a few times per day. You’ll also want to be sure that your contact information, such as your phone number and address, are kept up to date in case a potential customer or client wants to reach you.
Don’t: Post without permission.
Be sure to check before posting information about your customers, clients, or business partners. This can include, but is not limited to, sharing a positive review, a profile on one of your business partners or clients, a project you completed for a customer, etc. Chances are, they won’t mind if you highlight them on your Facebook page, but it’s always nice to give a heads up so they aren’t surprised.
Don’t: Stray too far from your brand.
As we mentioned above, you do have a little bit of room on Facebook to expand on who you are as an organization – maybe showing off your organization’s humorous side. However, you’ll still want to be sure to stick closely to your brand standards, using the same language you would use in front of a customer, and staying close to the same colors, fonts, and themes. The more recognizable and consistent your brand is throughout your social media platforms, website, and in your office, the better.
